COMMITMENT TO VETERANS & MILITARY-CONNECTED COMMUNITIES: Distinguish Syracuse as the premier university for veterans, military-connected students, and families

GOAL:

Trajectory To Excellence (Working Group #4)

Syracuse University has a distinguished legacy of leadership in addressing the needs of our nation’s veterans and military-connected communities, and of responsiveness to the needs of the day. Data suggests that post- 9/11 veterans and their families are taking advantage of the GI Bill program at an increasing rate. We anticipate that those needs and educational aspirations will continue to grow, and with that in mind, we are committed to being the premier university for veterans and military students. Building on our faculty and staff expertise, programmatic infrastructure, and institutional resources, we also are uniquely positioned to serve as a thought leader in areas relating to the social, economic, and wellness concerns of the nation’s veterans and military-connected communities.

OBJECTIVES:

We will achieve this by:

Developing support services and academic offerings that focus on the needs and aspirations of Veterans or military families

• Enhancing the expertise of the faculty on Veterans, military & national security interests

• Investing in technology and off site infrastructure to provide state of the art education in military affairs

Scaling capabilities & focusing efforts in government relations and major donor advancement

• Increasing veteran enrollment, retention & graduation rates

• Working to ensure that veteran students who may harbor feelings of isolation are incorporated and normalized into the campus community

.

Common Charge

This Working Group will produce strategies to implement the objectives listed above from the Academic Strategic Plan. These strategies will emerge by refining the recommendations made by the working groups in the Discovery phase and cultivating the extensive information that was gathered throughout that process.

This group will:

Review the list of proposed strategies from the Discovery reports and agree on a prioritization of objectives to pursue

Determine specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound strategies to implement each objective

Establish a Key Performance Indicator(s), timeline and estimate of implementation costs for each of those strategies

Prepare an assessment process that uses the results of Key Performance Indicators over time and feedback loops for each objective in order to ensure continuous improvement

Perform due diligence on each strategy by conducting research, benchmarking and working with the central functions team that includes, legal counsel, risk management and budget departments in order to assess feasibility.

Prepare a report for the Chair persons to present to the Academic Strategic Plan Implementation Oversight Committee (ASPIOC) for endorsement
